I was out walking today (Saturday August 3, 2013) when I observed several large boxes behind a dumpster at the Salt Lake Safeway. Upon inspection, I discovered a box marked ”Do Not Use Recall” containing several bags of Safeway frozen boneless and skinless chicken thighs, and boxes containing Dr. Praeger’s lightly breaded fish sticks , packages of Waterfront Bistro skillet Meals Seafood Risotto 24 oz, and Sea Cuisine Talapia fish fillets “with a crispy coconut crust.”

I became very concerned, as I am a regular shopper at Safeway, using my Safeway card for my food purchases, why wasn’t the public notified of these food recalls by Safeway?

Shame on Safeway, with the increasing number of food recalls in the news, hepatitis A in our berries, salmonella in our meats and salads, Listeria monocytogenes bacteria and other organism in our food products, why didn’t Safeway tell us?

I went inside to the Salt Lake Safeway and spoke to the Safeway Salt Lake Manager, Mr. Gary Mizuuchi, about the box I found outside behind the dumpster marked ”Do Not Use Recall” containing several bags of Safeway frozen boneless and skinless chicken thighs, and boxes containing Dr. Praeger’s lightly breaded fish sticks , packages of Waterfront Bistro skillet Meals Seafood Risotto 24 oz, and Sea Cuisine Talapia fish fillets “with a crispy coconut crust.” Gary confirmed that there had been a recall several weeks ago and had no answer why the public was not notified?

Mr. Gary Mizuuchi quickly went to the back of the dumpster, grab the safeway shopping cart and put the box marked ”Do Not Use Recall” containing several bags of Safeway frozen boneless and skinless chicken thighs, and boxes containing Dr. Praeger’s lightly breaded fish sticks , packages of Waterfront Bistro skillet Meals Seafood Risotto 24 oz, and Talapia fish fillets “with a crispy coconut crust,” all into the Safeway shopping cart and then rushed and took the recalled products back into the store. Mr. Mizuuchi told me that the Recalled chicken and other products should have never been outside, that recalled meats and products have to be destroyed under strict procedures, guidelines and policies.

I then asked him again, why was the public not notified, and what was the exact date of the recall and what were these products being recall for?

And what government agency had notified Safeway of the recall?

Gary did not have any answers for me and then told me that I would now have to speak to Heidi Sparks the head of Safeway Security, Gary said he could not give me Ms. Sparks phone number, that he would have her call me immediately. Ms. Sparks has not called me and Safeway has done nothing to provide me with the recall information to pass on to the Public.

I shared this information with some of my neighbors, who told me that they purchase their Chicken and meat several weeks or months in advance and keep it frozen in the freezer, and told me for Safeway and the government to not alert the public to assure these products are not being consumed by anyone. And to risk peoples health and not care to notify the public of a recall of Safeway’s chicken, meats & other products is of great danger and concern.

We will keep you posted and we are greatly concerned with the failure of Safeway to notify the public and to ensure us, the consumer’s are promptly notified and protected from consuming recalled food and that Safeway take responsibility with our food safety for our children, friends, families and fellow Seniors in the community, the Salt Lake Safeway is located at 848 Ala Lilikoi St Honolulu, HI 96818.
